Training ethos
We train on a Sunday morning in the sports hall at Allestree Woodlands School during term time. The sessions do not have strict age groups, but here is a guide of what to expect. Coaches, in discussion with parents/guardians will make a decision after initial trial sessions which group your daughter will be placed.
Sessions are progressive and follow a new framework delivered by Level 1 and 2 coaches, ensuring your daughter gathers core and advanced skills appropriately to develop her game and enable her to pursue her chosen pathway. We work hard to create a positive, supportive and respectful training environment where the girls feel confident to explore new skills and strategies, knowing that mistakes are a natural and accepted part of learning.
Our belief is that this creates resilient and hardworking players, the key to a great team!
Allestree is a highly successful club and have already developed and supported a number of players who have progressed to national squads, Loughborough Lightning, Nottingham Forrest, county and regional teams but we would still like to continue to progress so are working on introducing new elements into our coaching calendar. We would like this to include invited coaches to deliver specialist sessions, running drop‑down training focused on positional development, providing regional‑level training for the current U14 squad, and preparing a new U16 team ahead of trials in June 2027, along with plenty of additional enrichment opportunities.
9-10am Foundation with Hayley and Jenny (Usually school years 4,5 and 6)
Training is based around FUNdamentals, where players will learn to move efficiently and safely whilst progressions basic netball skills and techniques. Children experience match play every week to prepare them for future leagues. Coaches will create a positive and encouraging environment where they can progress whilst enjoying themselves.
10-11am Development with Karen (Usually years 7 and 8)
Session registration is 9.50am
Training is based around specific movement skills for the game of netball with core and more advanced skill development. Players will experience progressive drills with purpose, interactive practices where player reasoning and adjustment is encouraged and match play with a skill or tactic based focus. matches are umpired by our player volunteers which gives the coaches time to have 1-1 coaching with the players.
11-12pm Progression with Bec, Jen and Debbie (Usually years 9,10 and 11)
Session registration is 10.50am
Training progresses directly from previous years and adds additional skills and techniques that are often position specific. This stage is developed to make an energy efficient player in terms of movement skills and tactics, a thinker who is adaptive and quick thinking and most importantly someone who understands the action-reaction of theirs and team mates movements and actions.
12-1pm Performance with Bec, Jen and Debbie (Usually year 12 and 13)
Session registration is 11.50am
By this stage our players have so much experience under their wings but we have a few more advanced skills and tactics to impart on them yet! Sessions stay with the same level of structure and purpose but focus will shift to empoly these with specific games in mind. Teams will be firmly established and opposition well known as they will often be playing adult based teams. Skills and tactics will be developed with these games in mind. Winning is great but not everything, we believe in the importance of knowing when the team has had a good game as this is not judged on result alone. our aim is for the girls to self-evaluate, lead discussion as a team and independently organise their game play.
NB Our year groups are approximate and judgements are made on experience, friendships and coaches’ judgements.
Player Development
We fully support girls who choose to play netball several times a week and take advantage of additional opportunities such as local Super League hubs, Netfitz, Willows or Abbey Sports, we will actually share opportunities with you, but if your daughter joins a second club or league alongside her Allestree commitments, please inform her coach. We are happy to support her development, but there are rules around representing in the same league. For example, if she plays in the Yardley League for Allestree, she cannot also play for another club in Yardley. Playing in a different league, such as one of the Burton leagues, is permitted and can enhance her game, but would appreciate you checking with us first please..
If your daughter is ever considering leaving Allestree, we ask that you speak with any member of our team you feel comfortable approaching, as we are committed to learning, improving and providing the best possible experience for our players.
