We offer in an in-house coaching programme and umpiring mentorship to support our future netball stars
At Allestree Netball Club, we’re proud to offer an in‑house coaching and umpiring framework designed to support players as they work towards their Into Umpiring Award and/or UKCC Level 1 Assistant Coach qualification. This pathway gives our young leaders the chance to develop new skills in a supportive environment while gaining real, hands‑on experience on and off the court.
The UKCC pathway provides four levels of coaching qualifications, each building confidence, knowledge, and leadership. From age 16, players are eligible to be assessed for their Level 1 Assistant Coach award. Our in‑house programme has been created to complement and prepare for Level 1, while also introducing elements they will later encounter in Level 2. For those who discover a passion for coaching, this pathway provides everything needed to progress toward a nationally recognised qualification.
With a Level 1 award, individuals can volunteer or work as an Assistant Coach, helping deliver planned sessions whilst a Level 2 qualification allows coaches to lead independently; designing programmes, running sessions, and even being paid by schools, clubs, or individuals. It’s a brilliant way to support studies or early career development while doing something rewarding and enjoyable.
Each participant is paired with a mentor and placed within a Sunday training group, giving them a safe space to learn, practise, and build confidence. They’ll gain an understanding of how sessions are planned, structured, and delivered, and will begin offering coaching suggestions to small groups and individuals as they grow into their role.
They will also be attached to a team, where they can observe match play, contribute to tactical discussions, and be involved in decision‑making around strategies. This is a very different skillset from coaching sessions — requiring game awareness, adaptability under pressure, clear communication, and confident decision‑making.
For those pursuing umpiring, participants will have the opportunity to umpire Yardley League matches under mentorship, gaining practical experience while being supported every step of the way.
This framework prepares our young people for future opportunities as assistant coaches and umpires as they move into higher education, further education, employment, or support work. Netball leadership develops so many transferable skills that employers value, including:
Communication & confidence
Decision‑making under pressure
Team leadership & people management
Organisation & planning
Problem‑solving & resilience
These experiences help shape capable, confident young adults ready for whatever comes next. Volunteering through this pathway can also contribute towards DofE, Futures Award, and other programmes that support CV development.
